Carbothermal synthesis of micron‐sized, uniform, spherical silicon carbide (SiC) particles

چکیده
Silicon carbide (SiC) particles are exciting structures because of their hardness, chemical inertness, and dielectric properties. In particular, absorption/emission properties in the mid-infrared range render them suitable for ambient temperature thermal emitters. However, synthesis uniform, spherical is still challenging. Here, we present a robust procedure based on carbothermal reduction silica precursor particles. With an isotropic shrinkage ∼30 %, particle shape uniformity retained. Furthermore, outline influence gas atmosphere during treatment demonstrate successful conversion to SiC by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, optical analysis.

Combustion Synthesis of Silicon Carbide
Combustion synthesis (CS) is an effective technique to produce a wide variety of advanced materials that include powders and net shape products of ceramics, intermetallics, composites and functionally graded materials. This method was discovered in the beginning of 1970's in the former Soviet Union (Merzhanov & Borovinskaya, 1972), and the development of this technique has led to the appearance...
متن کاملChapter 1 Introduction to Silicon Carbide ( Sic ) Microelectromechanical Systems ( Mems )
This chapter serves as a brief introduction to the basic properties of silicon carbide (SiC) and the advantages of using SiC over other semiconductor materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Given the excellent and extensive review chapters that follow this one, I have confined this chapter to recent research performed at the University of Edinburgh in the area of SiC microelectrome...
متن کاملOrdered mesoporous silicon carbide (OM-SiC) via polymer precursor nanocasting.
Ordered mesoporous SiC with high specific surface area (650-800 m(2) g(-1)) and well ordered pore structure was obtained via nanocasting of polycarbosilanes into SBA-15 and subsequent conversion of the polymer at 1300 degrees C.
متن کاملBeaded silicon carbide nanochains via carbothermal reduction of carbonaceous silica xerogel
Novel silicon carbide nanostructures, beaded nanochains, are prepared from the carbothermal reduction of a carbonaceous silica xerogel with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and lanthanum nitrate as additives. The nanochains consist of a stem with a diameter of about 50 nm and uniform beads with diameters of 100–200 nm. It is demonstrated that the tensile strength of an epoxy composite filled with...
